I know I posted last summer that I would not be continuing with Guiltless & Glamorous due to my schedule, but would of course leave the blog up for anyone wanting access to the information I have posted in the past.

Well, I have decided to branch out and 're-launch' Guiltless & Glamorous as...Guiltless & Gourmet! This will be done under my real name, Anna, and at the address http://guiltlessandgourmet.wordpress.com.

The reason for this is that I do not have time to do the research and writing required for Guiltless & Glamorous, so Guiltless & Gourmet is going to follow a different path...to show how easy it is to follow a vegetarian diet, I'm going to post a photo and description (with recipe if home-cooked) of my dinners each day (well, I don't want to aim for the impossible, so I would say most days :)). That way everyone can see how easy it is to follow a well-balanced and yummy vegetarian diet!

I remember when I first became vegetarian. The first few months felt as though they were about deprivation, rather than embracing a new lifestyle. It was all about what I couldn't have anymore. Of course, as time went on, I realized that rather than just cutting out meat I would have to start to add other items into my diet, and I can safely say that I never realized how amazing the gastronomical world was until I started researching how to eat a balanced and delicious vegetarian diet.

Ethnic food was in many ways my saviour at the beginning. So many countries cook vegetarian food so well - and have done for generations, long before vegetarianism became 'popular'. The Greeks make amazing spinach pies, the Mexicans know how to work with beans and the Middle Easterns find a way to make every pulse - especially chickpeas! - super yummy. However, the Indians really know what to do - which makes sense as some traditional Hindi diets are vegetarian. This really was good news for me as Indian food is one of my favourites - and still, to this day, the only meat item I miss is butter chicken!

Also, while I say that I do sometimes miss butter chicken, on the whole after six-eight months of vegetarianism, my tastes began to completely change and I no longer craved meat. In fact, as my family and friends will attest to, I feel quite ill at the smell of cooking meat and certainly no longer crave it. At times if I accidentally have some meat my body won't digest it as it no longer produces those enzymes (I'm sure if I was to slowly re-introduce meat into my diet my body would cope, but I just mean that having it once after not eating it at all for two years was too much!).

Some vegetarians are more relaxed; my mother is what is known as a pescatarian, so she eats fish but no meat. Also, some like to have a bit of turkey once a year or some other meat if they are staying at a friend's house and it is offered to them. I always say that although I couldn't do vegetarianism that way, every little bit helps. The benefits of vegetarianism are many - it helps the environment, your health and, of course, animals. It is my love of animals that made me go vegetarian though I do get a kick out of the fact that I am helping the environment and I enjoy the health benefits - added energy, clearer skin, less saturated fat - that I reap from following this diet.

As to how to get started...it's up to you. If you are an all-or-nothing person and you are good at setting your mind to something, go cold turkey (forgive the pun!). Give it all up one day and just change. Some people respond best to this method. However, I gradually cut out meat - starting with pig products (pigs are so intelligent and so cute, this one was easy!), then cutting out red meat, followed by chicken and lastly seafood and fish, as I never ate too much of this to begin with. And remember, don't make the same mistake I did - don't just cut out and forget to add back! Every time you cut out one meat group, add in a new vegetarian meal that you hadn't tried before - something with beans or pulses if you're not used to eating those normally.

Hopefully the recipes and photos I post on this blog will help you with adding to your diet rather than taking away. Ultimately, my diet now has so many more options in it than before I was vegetarian, ironically enough. Then dinners were all meat + starch + veg. Now they are so much more interesting and outside-the-box than that! So I hope to inspire others and please, please, please feel free to comment or email me with questions!

Hi all!

If it hasn't been obvious by the lack of posts since April, I am unable to maintain this blog any longer due to my crazy work schedule. I thoroughly enjoyed doing it and still believe wholeheartedly in the cause - I continue to use only cruelty-free products at home and encourage everyone I know to do the same (while trying to avoid being preachy!). I'm still a vegetarian and am in fact 50% vegan - partly for animal reasons and partly for the health benefits. Honestly, if you find that you suffer from allergies etc try going dairy-free for a month and see if you feel any better. It will make a huge difference! (Gluten can often cause the same but I don't want to overwhelm you! If you're feeling adventurous though, try a month gluten-free too...it's amazing!)

So basically, this is my goodbye but I want to assure you all that this blog will remain online. Perhaps it won't be found so often by newcomers due to the fact that I am not actively exchanging links anymore and it won't be updated, so it won't be up there in the search engines, but the resources I have posted will continue to be relevant, so this blog can continue to be used as a reference when people are uncertain about which brands and products to purchase and support.

Sorry for the long delay - again - in between posts. I will try and be more regular but more delays may be forthcoming as my schedule gets increasingly crazy. Please forgive!

I was a lucky girl recently and was sent some samples of Vancouver's own Riversol skincare line to test out. This skincare line, developed by dermatologist Dr. Jason Rivers and Dean Johansson, is produced locally in Vancouver, BC and actually was the official skincare line for the ten men and eight women on the Canadian Freestyle Ski Team in the recent Vancouver Winter Olympics. The team used the brand's fragrance-free, hypoallergenic T-Plus line.

"Riversol incorporates a highly effective moisturizing system that will keep the team's skin protected and hydrated in the extremely dry and cold conditions they are constantly exposed to during outdoor training and competition," said Dr. Rivers in a recent press release distributed by Riversol Skin Care, Inc. The T-Plus line contains Thujaplicin, an ingredient derived from the Western Red Cedar Tree, the official tree of British Columbia. This potent natural antioxidant has anti-aging effects, added the release.

I tried the brand's moisturizing concentrate, moisturizer, eye cream, foaming gel cleanser and cream cleanser. I also got a friend to sample a couple of the products as she has a different skin type to me and would be able to offer more accurate and diverse feedback. Also, I sampled these products as I travelled home for a week, so the change in climates provided an extra challenge for the products to overcome - my skin is usually combination - oily in the T-zone and dry on the cheeks - but being in Vancouver for the past few months has meant it has become oily all over. So I used the foaming gel cleanser mainly, and the cream cleanser while home when my skin dried out from travel. I use the eye cream every morning and I sampled both moisturizers. Here's my - and when I couldn't contribute, my friend's - feedback (all prices in Canadian $):

- Foaming gel cleanser: I loved this. I have never had a gel cleanser that foamed, only cream. The gel was excellent for my oily skin and felt very refreshing, so was great in the morning to wake you up. It would be ideal for a person who suffers from acne or oily skin. $35, 8 fl oz (240ml)

- Cream cleanser: This provided a rich lather which was soothing for the skin but to be honest, I used it only once while travelling (it certainly helped combat airplane dryness!). My girlfriend used it for a few days straight and said she definitely felt that her skin was softer and smoother even before applying moisturizer, so she was sold. $35, 8 fl oz (240ml)

- Eye cream: This was my favourite of the products that I sampled. A good eye cream is an essential tool for every woman to have in her beauty kit, from a young age, because it's an excellent preventative. With this one, I can feel it working. $60, 0.5oz (15g)

- Moisturizing lotion: This lotion is so light that you will barely feel it on your skin, which is a good thing - particularly if your skin is oily at all. This is a great daytime lotion. $70, 2oz (60g)

- Moisturizing concentrate: This was a bit too oily for me but my mom loved it - for older skin and dry skin it is extremely nourishing, so it is probably best used for specific skin types that require that extra hydration. $70, 2 oz (60g)

Guiltless Goodies: Keeping up with the Kardashians' bebe collection!

Hi all!

Sorry for the sporadic posting recently - I have been kind of crazy, flitting between countries. I'm on vacation now so have finally gotten round to checking out the Kardashian sisters' collection for bebe, after reporting a while ago that it would be shown at New York Fashion Week.

The sisters have put together a number of pieces - mainly dresses but also with some separates, such as a pencil skirt, top and blazer - and if you're a fan of the Kardashian sisters' style (you should probably also thank their stylist, Monica Rose, who is a personal favourite of mine) then this collection embodies an effective blend of the three girls' style very well. There are some leather pieces in there which I have not included, and I am only featuring those pieces which particularly caught my eye, but the whole collection can be viewed online at bebe's website (click here). bebe of course is still a fur-free retailer, and as mentioned in my previous post, Khloe Kardashian has been outspoken against fur through her collaboration with PETA.

Check out my favourites below - I would rank these as Ideal Investments because they are, of course, more pricey than bebe's usual apparel, due to the fact that they carry the Kardashian name (attach any celebrity's name to anything and you apparently have justification to hike the prices at least 30%!). But the pieces - particularly the dresses - are great party wear and because they are in primarily basic and neutral colours, they can be worn more than once when accessorized correctly.

Guiltless Goodies: Oscars 2010 rounds off the red-carpet season

Hi all!

The Oscars were the usual fashion spectacular they are every year, but with a poor showing this year of cruelty-free picks. Didn't find many John Varvatos tuxes and only Penelope Cruz and Julianne Moore (and the latter only to the Vanity Fair after-party) did it for me with their Donna Karan and Calvin Klein (respectively) dresses.

Livia Firth, wife of nominee Colin Firth, of course kept her red carpet challenge going and wrote about the final awards show of the season - and the big one, at that - on her VOGUE UK blog. She wore a dress made entirely of waste and managed to look completely stunning doing so.

Despite not winning the Oscar, I'd say Colin's still a very lucky man.

Penelope Cruz, nominated for best supporting actress for Nine and last year's winner (thus she presented the award for Best Supporting Actor this year) wore a burgundy Donna Karan Couture gown, which she looked stunning in.

Julianne Moore was a no-show for the ceremony but showed up at the Vanity Fair after-party in this sophisticated Calvin Klein number.

Another awards ceremony that took place this past weekend was the Independent Spirit Awards, which saw Rosario Dawson show up in a Stella McCartney number that proved that cruelty-free can still be plenty glitzy enough for the red carpet.

Showcasing her equally stylish taste was Olivia Wilde, wearing a Ralph Lauren maxi dress on the Independent Spirit Awards' red carpet.

Hi all!

Right now I think it's pretty safe to say I feel very lucky to be living in Vancouver...the city of the Olympics. The festive spirit was evident downtown last night as my friends and I watched the Opening Ceremonies on the big screen and saw Wayne Gretzky light the Olympic torch.

The city is full of tourists and athletes and the party atmosphere is as lively as ever, but there was initial controversy following the 21-year-old Georgian luge rider's death in training yesterday, and now controversy over 'threats' US ice skater Johnny Weir has received from animal rights activists after he added white fox fur to his Olympic costume.

Although I think it's appalling and absolutely disgusting that he would use fur for a figure skating costume, but it also is not appropriate to respond to these situations with death threats or violence. So let's leave the assaults out of it and just encourage athletes to be kinder in their practices, no?

Hi all,

So I was never a fan of Alexander McQueen's because his line and work was not cruelty-free, and he often used fur in his designs. but his creativity was overwhelmingly evident in his designs and it is always sad when a life is lost, particularly in such a tragic fashion.

Reports that Alexander McQueen founder Lee McQueen committed suicide at age 40 broke just as the lights were going down for the start of the BCBGMAXAZRIA runway show at New York Fashion Week. I encourage you to read, however, because it not only provides some information about this tragic event and some links to some well-written and touching tributes (click on the "Previous" and "Next" links under the post), but also spotlights the runway show of a great cruelty-free favourite of mine, BCBGMAXAZRIA, which managed to put on a great show to temporarily transport audiences away from the tragic reality of the present into a fashionable, stylish, oh-so-chic world of beauty and glamour for a short while. Hi all!

The name Livia Firth may not be instantly recognizable to you but her husband's name - ahem - Colin Firth, should be. Well his beautiful wife Livia has made a commitment this year to wearing only eco-friendly, sustainable fashions when accompanying Colin on the red carpet. Right now those appearances are plentiful, as Colin promotes his latest film A Single Man and also prepares for the Oscars, which has generated him a nomination for his role in this film.

Therefore, Livia has been flying the world attending premieres and will soon be gearing up for the Academy Awards - all in sustainable haute couture. The whole time she is keeping a blog on Vogue.co.uk's site (I know I'm not a fan of Vogue, but if you just go to this blog website I can forgive it!) and she's very diligent and timely with her updates. Plus she has really done her research, so one can learn a lot just by reading her posts. Enjoy! In the meantime, here's a shot of Livia with the movie's star Julianne Moore at last night's Paris premiere of A Single Man - she wore a Linda Loudermilk suit made of 50% bamboo.

I'm a little bit cynical about Valentine's Day (did I say little bit? When I say that I mean, very), but I understand that there are millions of loved-up couples out there who aren't, so this post is for them.

Being green is all about being good to Mother Earth, but what about being good to your fellow Earthlings? Animals are a part of our world and we can all be a little "greener" simply by making smart shopping decisions when buying household and health products and beauty aids.

Many health and beauty companies moved away from animal testing in the '80s and '90s when nonprofits like PETA exposed the ugly side of cosmetic testing to the public. However, there are still many large conglomerates who continue to test on animals such as Unilever, Procter & Gamble and Johnson & Johnson. These companies are not protecting your safety - they are protecting themselves from lawsuits (although animal tests have not proven effective at helping the companies win these lawsuits). And, animal testing on household items and cosmetic products is NOT required by law! Many consumers assume that brands marketed as green, healthy and natural would be cruelty-free. That is unfortunately not the case. Brands such as Aveeno and Neutrogena are owned by these large corporations (Johnson & Johnson in this case) and cannot be considrered cruelty-free.

But, the good news is that many brands do sell cruelty-free products, and they are not necessarily more expensive than their inhumane counterparts. Wet N Wild, Queen Helene, Almay, Revlon, Bonne Bell, Kiss My Face and Yes to Carrots are some good examples of cruelty-free drugstore brands. Method cleaning products and Trader Joe's household products are also cruelty-free. And, don't forget to check your local health food store for a wide selection of cruelty-free products.

One issue with finding truly cruelty-free brands is that brands can call themselves “cruelty-free” if they do not test their finished products on animals, but they can still buy ingredients from suppliers who are conducting animal tests. How many times have you seen "This finished product was not tested on animals," on the back of your shampoo or facial cleanser? There are no regulations for using the term “cruelty-free” like there are with “USDA Organic” labels. So, buyer beware. Now, where can you get more information on which products are cruelty-free? PETA's Caring Consumer (http://search.caringconsumer.com/), the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIC) (http://www.leapingbunny.org/) and the National Anti-Vivisection Society (NAVS) (http://www.navs.org) have some great cruelty-free lists. There are many other great resources on the internet - just have a look around!

We all want to buy cruelty-free beauty products, but many times the problem is that we don’t have time to do research on brands before buying. You can get a free cruelty-free shopping guide from Caring Consumer (http://www.caringconsumer.com/resources_order.asp) or Leaping Bunny (http://www.leapingbunny.org/order.php). Hi all!

The beginning of the year is always crazy as awards season leaps into action in advance of the big one - the Oscars - in February. So far we started off with the casual and always-fun People's Choice Awards before graduating to the sophistication and pre-Oscar warm-ups of the Golden Globes and SAG (Screen Actors' Guild) awards in the last week. Throw in the Critic's Choice Awards there too and you've got yourself a number of occasions when the stars come out to play in their very finest.

Of course, many of these awards shows mean that celebrities show up in top designer gowns and outfits, and as we know at Guiltless & Glamorous, a lot of those designers use fur and other cruel practices in their designs, even if not on the actual dresses that you see on the red carpet.

So it's important to give props to those stars who promoted cruelty-free designers this awards season. Take a gander below at some of the best of the lot! And if you know of one or two that I've missed that you feel are worth a mention, email me!

Necessary News: Bebe and Kardashians to feature at NY Fashion Week

Hi all!

If you hadn't heard already - if you're able to avoid hearing the latest news about the Kardashian sister trio (Khloe, Kim and Kourtney) - the three oldest Kardashian siblings recently designed a line of clothing with Bebe - a store that has made a commitment to never sell fur.

Well, Glamour is now reporting that the sisters' designs will be featured at New York Fashion Week, appearing after Derek Lam on the runway with a 10am time slot.

Love 'em or hate 'em, the Kardashians are known for being a fashionable bunch, and Bebe produces some great, hot dresses and shoes (though the dresses are usually too short for me and the shoes too high, but hey, I think they're designed for someone about six inches shorter than me - and I'm 5'8", not exactly the tallest of tall!).

Khloe Kardashian has also posed nude for PETA's I'd Rather Go Naked... ads, pledging her allegiance to the organization's anti-fur campaign. So together they at least make a fur-free match in heaven - let's hope the collection reflects this too!

Continuing my 'Welcome to the New Year' series I have a feature on hair products that should please all of you out there who don't want to sacrifice your beloved hair products because they test on animals. I know how this feels; hair products are like hairdressers - once you find one who does a good job you want to stay with them forever and ever. If they move away, you're devastated (I once had a friend who commuted two hours each way to another city just to get her hair cut because her hairdresser had moved cities).

Well, these products have all been tested and used by myself and in fact the Ideal Investment Giovanni products are my go-to showering shampoos. When I want to treat myself I spring for the Pureology (or when I just got a really expensive highlighting job done and want to ensure it stays as long as possible!). The Pureology smell just amazing, too. Nexxus are a fantastic cruelty-free drugstore brand, so there are many options for all budgets.

Please note that although I know there are many women out there who have never coloured their hair - my sister is one of them - I am spotlighting the colour-care products from each line here because a) they are the ones I have tried, as I have dyed hair, b) the majority of women, it has been studied, shop for colour care products, and c) if a line's colour-care products work well, there's a high chance that the rest of their products do so as well. It's true. Colour maintenance is complicated and tricky, so the highest test of a line is to test their colour-stay shampoos and conditioners.

As for those of you with separation anxiety, it's okay. I understand. That often-quoted myth about having to change your shampoo often because your hair gets 'used to it' isn't quite true, either, but there are other reasons hair begins to look a little dull and those once wonder-products stop being so, well, wonderful. There's a great blog post over at Viva Woman (a natural beauty blog) about this, so I don't need to say too much - but if you are having some separation anxiety about this, just head on over there and read what they have to say. They pretty much cover all the bases.

So here are my top three hair product lines to give a try in the New Year, one for each budget level. These hair products left my hair and self feeling guiltless and glamorous, so I hope they do the same for you!

Bargain Buy

The Nexxus Dualiste line ($6-$17, drugstores or amazon.com) answered my prayers: I didn't just want a shampoo and conditioner that treated my colour-treated hair, I also wanted one that did other things too! Just because I dye my hair doesn't mean I don't also have curliness to deal with or dryness or oiliness...so out came the Dualiste line, in which every product offers colour protection but each one offers another benefit as well, so you can truly pick the right product for your hair type and colour. Finally!

My favourite product is below - the leave-in conditioning spray that provides a silky smooth finish and protects your colour further by shielding it from the elements:

I have provided a variety here, because while I tend to need the Color Protection + Intense Hydration options there are other choices for those of you who would prefer the volume option or the anti-breakage option, for example. Ideal Investment

My personal favourite, the Giovanni cosmetics line ($7.99 and upwards), ColorFlage, makes your hair look as sharp and snazzy as the products' packaging :). With bottles shaded for your hair colour, to avoid any confusion, the line offers shampoos and conditioners for any hair colour, all made from organic ingredients such as organic oils, vitamins, herbs, minerals, proteins and nutrients to enrich and protect hair. Other than the line's ColorFlage products I have used many of the conditioners, such as the leave-in conditioner and the deep conditioning treatment, and all are fantastic. I also used the Deep Moisture shampoo, which hydrates while cleansing. Below are links to all of the products from this line that are my personal favourites, including the blonde ColorFlage as that is the shade I require.

Expensive Elegance

Pureology ($16.99 and upwards) is a vegan line of colour-care hair products designed to provide vegans and other cruelty-conscious consumers with not just any old 'natural' hair alternative but one that doesn't just work, it blows the competition away. By far my favourite hair line, if I could afford to use these all the time I would (I have very thick hair so I go through shampoo by the bucketload. Otherwise it would be affordable - Pureology is not actually that expensive).

I discovered Pureology because I went to talk to a hair stylist about my frustration over the fact that my hair colour fades so fast after I get it done - and it costs a small fortune every time! She explained to me that sulfates are what cause colour's vibrancy to fade and introduced me to Pureology, which is a sulfate-free line. Sulfates also help shampoos to get that 'suds-up' effect, so Pureology shampoos aren't as foamy as other lines, but you can rest assured that this is because it is doing its job, and protecting your hair colour. As above, some of my favourites are linked below where they can be bought at a discount rate on Amazon.com. Please note that there are many that seem very high pried because they are bulk buys - Pureology service a lot of hair salons so their products are available in liters and even larger containers, so if you want to save money by buying in bulk, they definitely provide that option.

As part of a 'welcome to the New Year' series, I will be profiling three different product lines for the face, body, hair and cosmetics. It's 2010, and it's always good to start out the New Year the way you mean to go on - and I encourage you all to ensure that that means a regimen to maintain your looks and health while benefiting the planet and, of course, animals.

As the first part of this four-part series, I'm taking a look at skincare. Showcasing a different product line for each budget level, there is something for everyone here. In the January issue of SELF magazine, Boston dermatologist Dr. Jeffrey Dover, is quoted as saying "[t]he key to beautiful, healthy skin is consistency", meaning that skin prefers for you to stick with the same products rather than switching things up all the time. Now, research has shown that your various skincare products do not have to come from the same product line, but because companies usually manufacture their skincare products to work in conjunction with each other, these tend to be the most complementary, so here I am showcasing entire lines of products. Use some or all of the items in the line and see your skin - and conscience - improve this year!

Bargain Buys

St. Ives has come out with a great new-look line of face care products - this is the line I use on a daily basis, because it's just so affordable. The line comes with exfoliating scrubs, blemish-fighting cleansers, gentler cleansers which incorporate make-up removers, deep cleansing masques, hydrating masques, microdermabrasion and moisturizers. There's literally something for everyone. Because it would be impossible to showcase every product, I'm going to feature the ones that I use, and that - therefore - I know work. But I encourage you to hop over to the company's website, because it's full of information and you can browse each product to choose the best one for you.

St. Ives Make-up Remover and Facial Cleanser, drugstore.com or drugstores, $5.49

I use this product every day; it's amazingly gentle, especially because it's a make-up remover, so if you accidentally get any in your eyes you don't need to worry about screaming in pain while rushing to the tap.

St. Ives Fresh Skin Apricot Scrub, drugstore.com or drugstores, $4.29

I get worried about using too harsh an exfoliant on my face, but this product is super gentle, with small seeds for exfoliating that don't make you feel as though you are scratching up your face! Time and time again estheticians have emphasized to me the importance of exfoliating. Without exfoliating, the dead skin cells on your face build up, not only giving a dull complexion but also blocking pores, so that acne will develop underneath. Exfoliate at least once a week.

St. Ives Mineral Moisturizer with SPF 15, drugstore.com or drugstores, $10.99

This moisturizer smells great, but besides that, it's great for your skin. I love that it has SPF in it - and yes, I live in a hot climate but everyone, everywhere, needs to wear SPF on a daily basis to protect your face from the elements. Even in cloudy climates the sun peeks through, though we may not notice it. As you know, I'm moving back to Canada in a week and it will be the middle of winter there, but you can bet I'll be taking this with me - not just for the moisturizing properties, but also for the SPF.

Ideal Investments

Kiss My Face is such a fantastic company - it creates its products with the planet and animals in mind, while also ensuring that they are manufacturing items that people will want to use. Although I have not used the line's skincare products, we always have their bar soaps in the shower and I absolutely love them. They recently came out with a new skincare line called Potent & Pure Face Care, which is what I will spotlight here. The line has a product for every skin type. Kiss My Face Potent & Pure Clean for a Day Creamy Face Cleanser, kissmyfacewebstore.com, $15

As I mentioned before, this line has products at each level (cleansing, toning, moisturizing and more) for every skin type. So while they recommend this creamy face cleanser for normal to dry and sensitive skin, it also has a cleansing option for normal to oily skin, which is its Start Up exfoliating face wash. Also, if you prefer to cleanse with a soap bar rather than a creamy product, normal, dry and sensitive skin types can also use the Shea Soy facial cleansing bar.

Kiss My Face Potent & Pure Balancing Act facial toner, kissmyfacewebstore.com, $13.99

Keeping things easy, the line has one toner for all skin types - incorporating antioxidants with organic ingredients for a refreshing and effective facial toner.

Kiss My Face Potent & Pure C the Change Ester C serum, kissmyfacewebstore.com, $21

Using serum is a really valuable part of any skincare regime, so I was really pleased to see that Kiss My Face has included a serum in its line - many lines don't unless they are very high-end. Serums help prepare the skin prior to moisturizing, which means that the skin is able to absorb more of the hydration and nutrients from the moisturizer you apply. Many serums also have their own helpful properties, such as firming and hydrating properties.

Kiss My Face Potent & Pure Under Age ultra-hydrating moisturizer, kissmyfacewebstore.com, $21

This rich yet light daily moisturizer is recommended for normal to dry and sensitive skin, while the line also includes options such as a facial creme with SPF 10 for normal to oily skin, a brightening day creme with SPF 4 for all skin types and, for night, an intensive repair night creme for all skin types. I was really happy to see the night creme there - although they can feel heavy, it is equally important to apply moisturizer at night as in the daytime. If your skin is not hydrated enough, it will work to produce more oil to try to soothe some of its thirst, which can lead to more breakouts, so even if you have some acne, don't shy away from using a good hydrating creme moisturizer, or else you could get locked in the vicious cycle of dryness and oil production!

Expensive Elegance

When I have a bit of extra cash, I invest in Clarins' products. For a start, as they are made using botanical oils they all smell divine. Plus, I have always found that they really work. And, of course, Clarins was one of the companies that paved the way for abolishing animal testing back in a time when that was quite unheard of. So they really deserve our support!

Because Clarins' main business is skincare, they have a plethora of products to choose from, mainly separated by skin type and also by age. Therefore, I am just going to focus on the products I use, as I did with the St. Ives products, in order to share my experiences with you and try to sift through the vast array of products available. However, if you want to find the right products for you, visit the company's website or don't be afraid to go to a Clarins desk in any department store. Their sales reps are highly knowledgeable about the company's products and can take a look at your skin and make their own recommendations for you.

Clarins Water Comfort One-Step Cleanser, clarins.com, $30

This is my favourite Clarins product, hands down. A cleanser and toner in one, this saves time and smells heavenly - you'll want to put more and more of it on your face but actually it lasts a really long time - a sample-size bottle lasted me well over a month! It's perfect to use when leaving the gym, or somewhere where you need to freshen your face fast. Though the line has an array of 'proper' cleansers and a line of separate toners, I wanted to spotlight this one because I just love it and it's such a time-saver.

Clarins HydraQuench Lotion SPF 15, clarins.com, $48

The company's HydraQuench line is often recommended for younger skin, but it can really suit anyone. This moisturizer is recommended for normal to combination skin or for use in hot climates, so if you are ever going on holiday, this is the thing to take. It includes an SPF, and cools skin down when it's feeling overheated, so you can guarantee it's not too heavy, but its hydration qualities are not hindered by this lightness. It's a great product.

Clarins HydraQuench Cream-Mask, clarins.com, $35

I was given a sample of this to try once and I just wanted to put it on every five minutes. It has that quality that makes you feel as though you are in the spa having a facial - it's cool and creamy but intensely hydrating. A masque to use once a week - though you could use it more often if you wanted.

Clarins Beauty Flash Balm, clarins.com, $45

This is one of those odd products that doesn't really 'fit in' to any specific category, but I just had to mention it because it's one of my favourites. I would use it at the gym - when you've showered and you've used the cleansing water, put some of this on your fingertips and press it in to your face (don't rub it in) for a real 'glow'. It gives skin a dewy texture while moisturizing on the go.

Necessary News: Yay for Ellen and Tim Gunn!

Hi all!

PETA named its Woman and Man of the Year for 2009 and Ellen DeGeneres and Tim Gunn were the animal-friendly winners.

Ellen went vegan in 2008, and most notably talked about the all-vegan catering at hers and partner Portia de Rossi's wedding. She has used her celebrity to raise awareness for veganism in many other ways, as well. On her website, she posted a brief explanation for her decision to go vegan:

"I personally chose to go vegan because I educated myself on factory farming and cruelty to animals, and I suddenly realized that what was on my plate were living things with feelings."

Tim Gunn is best known for his role on Project Runway as advisor to the designers, but in his 'other' life he is the creative director at Liz Claiborne, Inc., which, as you well know from this blog, is fur-free. In this role he continues to tout designers who use faux animal products, like mock croc and faux fur.

Starting out the New Year with props to those who have done good in 2009 is a great way of encouraging everyone to keep their efforts going, in my book.

Guiltless Goodies: Living a Kind Life with great vegan reads

Hi all!

For Christmas my brother-in-law got me a goodie bag of three vegan books - a veritable goldmine of gourmet goodness! I know this is a fashion and style blog, but it obviously maintains a vegan theme, so I am going to take a brief step away from discussing all things glamorous to talk about all things gastronomical.

The Kind Diet by Alicia Silverstone was a book I plopped on my Christmas list knowing it was promoting a vegan diet. I was a little wary, as although my shopping habits are vegan, my diet has remained vegetarian since first making the meat-free move two and a half years ago. Veganism always seemed so 'extreme', and I worried slightly that this book would have no relevance to me. However, I was intrigued to read what the actress had to say, so I merrily put it on my list just in case someone happened to buy it for me.

Am I glad they did! This book is fantastic - Alicia writes with her own voice and quickly reassures that she isn't positioning herself as a celebrity with oodles of time and money to spend on maintaining this diet but is in fact taking an Everyman perspective, writing recipes and suggestions for exercise and eating that can fit into anyone's budget, schedule and lifestyle.

Simply put, there are probably many facts and statistics that Alicia writes that you've heard before - but it's the way she tells them - no lecturing or holier-than-thou smugness behind her words at all. You do not feel talked down to but rather encouraged. And there will also be a whole host of new information that will blow your mind and make you want to clean your fridge out immediately. Plus there's a few chapters on living a vegan life in general - not just keeping a vegan diet - and this is expanded on on her website TheKindLife.com.

I don't even feel that veganism is extreme anymore either. Sure, for the past few months I've noticed my body rejecting dairy more and more - I just don't have the taste for it I used to (and I used to not be able to wake up without a big bowl of cereal and tons of milk!). But I thought that actually taking that next step into veganism is a whole other deal - a huge life change that would make eating out practically impossible and would be sure to lead to a whole host of nutrient deficiencies. I was wrong. This book shows that. You. Must. Read. It.

The other goodies in my Christmas bag included another book I requested: The Conscious Cook. Tal Ronnen is a vegan chef (they're hard to come by) and his recipes are just amazing and absolutely delicious. Host a dinner party and cook some of these and I can guarantee no one will even realize it's vegan.

I also received a book I didn't ask for but was equally delighted to receive - I hadn't heard much about Ani Phyo before but this book is promoting raw food and also has a goldmine of recipes to choose from. I don't think I'll ever be 100% raw but incorporating raw meals into your regular diet is great for the body. Give it a try!

While on the subject of books (hey, my Bachelors was in English Literature, I'm a writer, I love books!), another vegan favourite is Skinny Bitch. It's a bestseller, yes, and has done well, yes, but I would recommend choosing your recipients carefully. For someone who is more sensitive, give them The Kind Diet and watch them realize, after being presented with a potent combination of gentle narrative with mind-blowing statistics, the benefits of a vegan lifestyle. But for someone who you feel can take it, Skinny Bitch delivers the facts with a hard-hitting style that may be just what that person needs (it is also more focused on weight loss, so that's another thing to take into consideration). The Skinny Bitch in the Kitch cookbook is also a member of my ever-increasing arsenal of vegan cookbooks, providing ever more options for meals, snacks and more.

I continue to promote the purchase of products that are made without animal testing and without fur - in short, without cruelty. This is because it is so simple, with the right information, to make informed and kind choices in your daily life. Fashion and beauty are things we should have fun with - not things we should ever make another being suffer for. But at the same time, diet is so essential. Alicia says it best in her book: "killing is a big deal". Just think on that for a bit, and do what you can to make a difference. Every person counts! And so does every animal.

Guiltless Goodies and Bargain Buys: Shopping the New Year sales for a move into cooler climes

Hi all!

After many mentions of the warmer climes in which I live, I am now taking a deep breath - gulp - and announcing that I will soon - as in, the next few weeks soon - be moving back up north to Vancouver (yes, Canada!) for a few months. Yes, a few months - January, February and March - which are some of the coldest of the year. Funny how these decisions come about - clearly this one was not influenced by weather but more by a need for a fresh new change in the fresh New Year. I am very excited about this change but a little hesitant about my winter wardrobe, which currently consists of a warm and fuzzy American Eagle Outfitters hoodie sweater, a pair of Ugg boots awaiting me in Vancouver, and a nice pair of heeled brown boots for fancier occasions. Other than that I have a great double-breasted coat in Vancouver and endless amounts of thin wraps (layering is essential!), a few long-sleeved tees and a healthy collection of mittens and hats.

So ultimately there isn't too much to add, but I will be in a busy and stylish city for at least 12 Friday nights, so there's going to have to be some improvements...but moving is also expensive. For this reason, I've compiled a selection of on-sale, budget (love New Year sales!) and cozy items from cruelty-free stores that will help my transition into the cooler weather, and will hopefully start off your New Year closets without breaking your wallets.

I love this sweater - it comes in a variety of colours, so you don't need to just get one, and they are long enough to be worn with leggings and Uggs for a casual day in but fancy enough - thanks to the boucle texture and the V-neckline (and the amazing jade green colour shown below!) - to be paired with a jeans-and-boots combo. For night, swap the jeans with black pants or leggings and put a lacy camisole underneath the sweater, with some sparkly flats - or, if you prefer heels, go for heels. Voila! I expected someone in a sweatshirt and Uggs, but off walked my best friend in coloured tights, a sweater dress and black boots, with a new hairstyle. An all-round winner!

Necessary News: Non-animal toxicology testing methods sought

Some quick news for you today...sorry it's been so long since my last post; work has been absolutely hectic but I will be posting a few different entries tonight to keep you going!

This is a press release put out by PR Newswire - so of course, with press releases be aware that they are promoting their own beliefs - but it's an interesting idea, I thought, to aim to create a 'society' who are working towards finding non-animal toxicology testing methods. It took a bit long to arrive, I feel, but hey - at least it's here now!

The presser was put out by the Institute for In Vitro Sciences, a non-profit organization that aims to promote the development of non-animal testing methods. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine was also behind the release, as the two organizations have come together to form a new scientific society dedicated to promoting the development and use of non-animal toxicological testing methods. This will be, the press release states, "the first scientific society in North America devoted to such a mission."

The discussion of cellular or in vitro approaches and computational toxicology approaches will take place in an organized forum provided by the American Society for Cellular and Computational Toxicology. The Society aims to facilitate the development, acceptance, and routine use of cellular and computational methods by open dialogue between industry, academic, advocacy and regulatory scientists, the presser adds.

It is hoped that other organizations will join forces to create growth in the society, said Kristie Sullivan, who is the scientific and policy advisor for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

"We invite scientists from industry, regulatory agencies and advocacy groups to become involved in the formation of the new society to ensure its success," says Sullivan. "Active participation will create a dynamic forum to share information and accelerate the development and use of in vitro and in silico methods..."

Erin Hill, vice-president of Program Development for IIVS, added: "The strong commitment of American scientists to alternative testing methods is illustrated by the National Academy of Sciences report, increased Environmental Protection Agency funding for non-animal methods, and other recent developments." She also mentioned that there are a number of these societies already in Europe, Asia and South America, so it is 'about time' that North America got up to speed.

InStyle magazine’s December issue featured one of my favourite singers – British vocal powerhouse Leona Lewis – in the season’s sparkliest make-up. As if you couldn’t tell from my recent posts, glitter and sparkle is super in this season, and it certainly makes it easy to feel festive.

How to do it: Makeup artist Mariel Barrera blended silver shadow over Lewis’ lids and creases and purple on her brow bones and near the tear ducts. “The purple balances out the intensity of the silver and creates a subtle highlight,” Berrera explains. Next, she applied black eyeliner inside the lower rims of eyes before swiping lashes with three coats of mascara. She finished with bronze blush and frosty pink lipstick.

She blended gold over lids, champagne under brow bones, and bronze under lower lash lines. “I didn’t want the lips to beg for attention, so I chose a semi-sheer brick colour instead of a true red,” says Barrera, who used a small stiff brush to apply. To make lips a bit more festive, she added a touch of silver-flecked gloss to the middle of Lewis’ lips. “When you keep the gloss in the middle, it makes lips look fuller,” says Barrera. She finished the look with a light dusting of apricot blush.

I had the pleasure of meeting with BCBG account executive Ashley Orefice the other day to take a look at the just-released BCBGMAXAZRIA holiday collection created by Max Azria, owner of the BCBG group, which includes haute couture line Herve Leger and which – yay! – is fur free.

Cosmetics company Alberto-Culver - which owns Alberto VO5, Nexxus, Sally Beauty (Femme Couture baked mineral make-up), St. Ives and TRESemme - has pledged its allegiance to anti-animal testing policies.

There has been some uncertainty on the web about Alberto-Culver's animal-testing stance. Here is what the company had to say when I contacted them about their policy:

"It has long been our policy not to use animals to determine the safety of our products. We can therefore assure you that none of our current products have been tested on animals. Neither have we contracted with third parties to conduct such tests on our behalf, nor have we instigated such testing on raw materials used in our products.

You should also be aware that in the European Union, a complete ban on the testing of cosmetic products was introduced by European Cosmetic Legislation and became effective in September 2004.

It is our policy to support alternative methods of testing, indeed such is our belief in this that Alberto Culver has been a long standing sponsor of the John Hopkins University Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing in the United States of America who are leaders in this field. For further information on the Center you may visit their website at CAAT. We use in vitro screening tests, together with clinical studies on human volunteers to establish the safety of our products, as required by the Cosmetic Safety Regulations."

Icky Institutions: Estee Lauder is a let-down

So after posting a few Estee Lauder products on here, having believed for a while now that they were pioneers in the anti-animal testing force, I found out that they, like other big cosmetics giants, are just as bad as their peers. On the Estee Lauder official website it reads:

Animal Testing

The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. is committed to the elimination of animal testing. We are equally committed to consumer health and safety, and bringing to market products that comply with applicable regulations in every country in which our products are sold. We do not conduct animal testing on our products or ingredients, nor ask others to test on our behalf, except when required by law. We evaluate our finished products in clinical tests on volunteer panels.
The Estée Lauder Companies fully supports the development and global acceptance of non-animal testing alternatives. To this end, the Company works extensively with the industry at large and the global scientific community to research and fund these alternatives.

For this reason, the Estee Lauder and Estee Lauder owned (see below for full list of Estee Lauder brands) products that were posted on this site will be removed shortly. Please join in expressing your disdain for this behaviour to Estee Lauder by emailing them from their website.

Necessary News: Some updates to Icky Institutions list

Hi all!

I have made some changes to the Icky Institutions list originally posted on this site (the second entry written, posted in October 2009). Unfortunately, I have done further research and discovered that some companies I thought - and have promoted on this site - were cruelty free are not. For example, although Burt's Bees claims not to test on animals, it is actually owned by Clorox, which is well-known for its animal testing habits. So by purchasing Burt's Bees products you are still, ultimately, funding the giant that owns them - and that is one big, cruel giant.

Some other stunners were revealed to me - Estee Lauder and MAC, for example. And people, DON'T be distracted by The Body Shop's once animal-saving message! It has been bought out by L'Oreal and its products are no longer free from animal testing.

Science Diet, a pet food, was bought by Colgate-Palmolive, which tests its products on animals and everyone knows about IAMS and its outrageous animal testing facilities - and these are pet foods!

Of course I am here to blog about cosmetics and fashion, but let me add one more note: I often editorialize on magazine fashion and beauty features in my posts. I tend not to discriminate when it comes to choosing magazines to feature, as most of them are advertising-driven and will almost never ban a product or company from its pages. That being said, I will NEVER EVER support or editorialize or promote or comment on any feature from the pages of VOGUE magazine. Anna Wintour is one of the worst perpetrators of fur promotion in the fashion industry and unfortunately, for some who-knows-what reason, she is respected (or, more likely, feared but still - think of Hitler - the effect is often the same) so people listen to her. I don't. But some do. So for that reason, I won't touch that magazine with a 10-foot pole.

Necessary News: Toxichip could spell the end of animal testing

Hi all!

An Irish news report released today announced that during the first Nanoweek (running this week, from 30 November to 4 December), scientists will unveil a new little gem known as a Toxichip,which could eliminate the use of animal testing.

The news report, released by RTE.ie, said: "Toxichip, which was developed at the Tyndall National Institute in Cork, is capable of monitoring how cells behave and interact with drugs, chemical pollutants in the environment and toxic substances in food and beverages.

"Cell-based biosensors, developed and made at Tyndall, integrated in the Toxichip platform also have the potential to replace animal testing currently used in toxicity screening.

"Already two companies, one in Ireland and a second in France, are seeking to invest in and apply this new technology."

Let's all keep our fingers crossed that the Toxichip is here to stay so we can spread the luck of the Irish to animals worldwide!

It's been a while since I last editorialized on the reasons I am doing this blog, so I thought I'd preface this post with a reminder about my motivations. Please bear with me, it's an important message that I will restrain from repeating too often but it is, I feel, worth a read as a reminder from time to time.

It is important to have a conscience. Especially in today's world, which is often corrupt and capitalist.

Companies like to make money; the bottom line is that they are entirely focused on their bottom line. Sadly, in order to meet their financial goals, many of them look for the cheap way out - not caring who or what they hurt in the process. There are all kinds of problems that have emerged because of this competitive attitude: sweat shops, fur farms and child labour are just a few. The cruelties of the leather and fur industries, the realities of poorly-regulated animal testing that still takes place in overcrowded laboratories - it is overwhelming and can make any consumer feel disturbed and powerless. However, if the companies' concern is their bottom line, that is something that everyone, as a consumer, can impact.

Major designers such as Max Azria (owner of the BCBG group) and Stella McCartney (whose line is vegan, meaning fur- and leather-free) have taken stances against the use of fur in the fashion industry. Brands such as Almay and Origins boast natural, often organic and always cruelty-free products at drugstore prices. Cosmetics giant Revlon has trumped its competitors - L'Oreal and Maybelline among them - by banning animal testing in the production of its products.

For guilt-free purchases this holiday season, below is a list of festive products that would make an ideal gift for anyone and everyone. Using purchasing power for good will ensure everybody wins – including the animals.

Recent news revealed that top Japanese cosmetics manufacturer Shiseido - who have previously admitted their animal testing practices (click here for post) told an anti-animal testing activist group today that they have "boosted efforts to suspend" animal testing "in the near future, if not immediately".

While this is not the time to go out and support Shiseido by purchasing their products, this is a time to communicate your encouragement to the company, so visit their Contact Us page on their Corporate Social Responsibility website and send encouraging notes to ensure that the company follows through with its promise and sets the standard for zero tolerance for animal testing in the cosmetics industry!

Necessary News: The doctor has spoken!

As I have said many times, the doctor explained that very often animal testing is irrelevant anyway, as animal's biological systems are so completely different to humans'.

Q: What humane testing methods exist in place of animal testing?
A: It still surprises many people to learn that non-animal testing methods are not only more ethical, they are also more applicable to human health. The differences in biology, chemistry and physiology mean that research conducted on animals doesn’t always translate effectively to humans. As more researchers realize this, they are turning to some of the following methods:

Selective formulation Choosing previously tested ingredients to create new products eliminates the need for further testing. Many manufacturers follow this principle in planning their product lines.
Human cultures Epiderm and EpiSkin are human skin cells grown in test tubes that are layered to mimic the structure of human skin. Cosmetics and household products can be tested on these rather than the skin of live rabbits. Corrositex is another test-tube option that gives an easy-to-read color change reaction to a hazardous product. And EpiOcular, a mass of skin cells specially grown to form a thin layer like that of the human cornea, has the potential to completely replace the cruel rabbit eye irritancy test.
Skin cultures taken by permission during surgical procedures (such as breast-reduction surgery) can be used to test whether a chemical can pass through the skin and be a potential poison risk.
Surgical specimens are also the main source of human tissues available from the National Disease Research Interchange (NDRI) in Philadelphia. This non-profit tissue bank makes more than 100 types of human tissues available for medical research. NDRI, along with Asterand, a company with offices in the US, UK and Japan that supplies human biomaterials for research, has made it easier than ever for companies to access human cells for testing.
The physiological chip Just as a microchip holds an intricate system of electronic connections, this 1x1-inch square of cultured cells is made up of cell compartments that are linked by a lifelike circulatory system that mimics the complex functions of the human body. The chips, developed by the Hµrel Corporation in Beverly Hills, CA, can be used to test for harmful (and beneficial) effects of experimental drugs, as well as toxicity of the liver and other organs.
Cellular tests Experiments that measure white blood cell response to chemicals and medical substances can be used in place of rabbit injections. These tests check for unexpected fever and inflammation—especially from receiving intravenous medications. The European Union just approved the use of five of these tests.
Bacteria-based tests performed on common microbes such as salmonella can be used to assess whether chemicals can damage DNA, and therefore present a cancer risk.
Microdosing Minuscule amounts of a test substance—much smaller than a typical dose used for medical purposes—are given to human volunteers so that researchers can track how the substances are transported and absorbed throughout the body.

Q: How do I know what products out there have been tested on animals?
A: Companies are not required to label their products to refl ect whether they have been tested on animals. But those that do not practice animal testing often print “cruelty-free,” “not tested on animals” and even “vegan” on their labels. Look for products with the V logo (for “certified vegan,” you can check it out at vegan.org) or the leaping bunny stamp of approval (leapingbunny.org).

Q: What will it take for companies to stop animal testing for good?
A: Pharmaceutical manufacturers are particularly reluctant to deviate from standard test procedures because animal tests have been the path to regulatory approval of their products with a minimum of liability. But the Vioxx scandal showed that animal tests are far from a guarantee of safety. (Vioxx was the anti-infl ammatory approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that was later found to increase the risk of heart attack and stroke; it was subsequently pulled from the market.
What’s more, the Environmental Protection Agency, the FDA and other agencies remain decidedly loyal to decades-old animal tests. Progress will come as legislators pressure these agencies to modernize the testing processes and as stockholders of major drug manufacturers bring resolutions that move the companies away from animal testing.
Ultimately, the recognition that animal testing is cruel, inaccurate and unnecessary will win the day, and benefit both the welfare of animals and scientific progress.

Caring Companies: Expensive Elegance from fur-free designers

Hi all!

Sorry it's been a while since my last post - I had a long weekend away shopping (which gave me some great ideas for blog posts which will be upcoming shortly) but unfortunately when I got back I was struck with a bad stomach virus - no doubt from travelling - and have been pretty much out of commission since. I still am bed-ridden, but you can always type on a laptop in bed!

So while away one of the main malls we went to is the Dolphin Mall in Miami, a fantastic outlet mall where bargains are rife. However, heading into the Saks outlet store (Off 5th Avenue) I realised that with department stores and other retailers that sell multiple brands, it's important to go in armed with your list of safe designers, otherwise you'll easily get distracted - there are so many brands under one roof. In general I try to discourage department store shopping because they do, ultimately, sell fur and brands that incorporate fur because they sell so many brands. But, if you do need to shop at them, just make sure you make guiltless decisions by ignoring products made by designers who can't seem to distance cruelty from glamour (attention chief offender: Michael Kors, who is the reason I don't watch Project Runway anymore).

Icky Institutions: Say NO to Giorgio Armani

Hi all!

In September 2008, it was reported that Giorgio Armani - who had previously pledged to abandon the use of fur in his designs - had returned to using fur.

Adding insult to injury, he had reincorporated the use of fur in his designs by designing fur jackets for babies.

Tomorrow I will be posting InStyle's October picks for its beauty products - one of which was an Armani product which I will not be posting after I found out that little tidbit, which I am sharing with you all as a plea to please make your voice heard.

If you do not feel passionately enough to email Armani (which I have done, and I will post the reply when I get it), then please at least abstain from buying their products. Yes, I love his perfumes too, but not at that cost.

Come on, we can all find a nice-smelling perfume elsewhere, and - if we really must - a faux-fur jacket for a baby.

Icky Institutions: Shiseido is another company using the "except when required by law" excuse

Hi all:

I gotta tell you, I'm getting a bit tired of receiving these replies from companies who claim they care very much about animal welfare and animal testing, and avoid it wherever possible, only using it when the law requires.

First of all, you know my opinion on animal testing by now. Every species has a different biological system - something that proves toxic - or safe - to an animal may have the opposite effect on humans. Put it this way: had we tested chocolate on dogs before releasing it to humans, we may never have got it! Chocolate is toxic to most dogs, causing them to foam at the mouth and vomit ... can you imagine a life without chocolate?

The other pet peeve of this argument that companies put forth is the most obvious one: if law is requiring them to test an ingredient on animals to deem it safe for human use, then that company probably shouldn't be using that ingredient at all. Clearly, there are ways to make products - cosmetic, cleaning, whatever - that render them safe without testing as there are many companies who have committed to selling cruelty-free products. Perhaps companies should consider banning those ingredients from their products, rather than subjecting lab animals to cruel testing procedures.

I've said before that I'm not a shock merchant, so I won't go into any gruesome details, but please understand that animal testing is not how you might imagine. The animals are not well looked after; often they are crammed in filthy cages and subjected to painful tests, after which they are not treated adequately so are either put down or allowed to suffer. If you want details there are plenty online - just google "animal testing".

So for now, enjoy Shiseido's response to the animal testing question; just the latest in a long line of nonsensical responses:

"At Shiseido, we believe that providing customers with safer, more
effective products is an important mission as well as complying with
cosmetics regulations enacted by countries worldwide. At the same time,
we respect the spirit and intent of ensuring animal welfare.

In order to fulfill this mission, Shiseido has not conducted animal
testing unless otherwise determined indispensable, including cases as
required by laws and regulations or in which alternative methods have
not been validated.

Additionally, Shiseido has been actively involved in the development of
alternative methods for safety testing since 1981 and we publicize the
results of associated research at meetings of Japanese and
international scientific societies and have undertaken concerted
efforts to share those results widely.

Consequently, alternative methods developed by Shiseido are highly
regarded both domestically and abroad. Recognition includes having
received 11 awards since 1991 at annual meetings of the Japanese
Society for Alternatives to Animal Experiments. This is the most ever
awarded to any Japanese company.

Shiseido will continue to actively undertake efforts to develop
alternative test methods, including joint research extending beyond the
framework of a company with the goal of eliminating all animal testing
at the soonest possible opportunity.

We ask for your understanding and support with regard to the Shiseido
Group’s stance on product safety and truly appreciate your continued
patronage.
