Cosmetics company Alberto-Culver - which owns Alberto VO5, Nexxus, Sally Beauty (Femme Couture baked mineral make-up), St. Ives and TRESemme - has pledged its allegiance to anti-animal testing policies.
There has been some uncertainty on the web about Alberto-Culver's animal-testing stance. Here is what the company had to say when I contacted them about their policy:
"It has long been our policy not to use animals to determine the safety of our products. We can therefore assure you that none of our current products have been tested on animals. Neither have we contracted with third parties to conduct such tests on our behalf, nor have we instigated such testing on raw materials used in our products.
You should also be aware that in the European Union, a complete ban on the testing of cosmetic products was introduced by European Cosmetic Legislation and became effective in September 2004.
It is our policy to support alternative methods of testing, indeed such is our belief in this that Alberto Culver has been a long standing sponsor of the John Hopkins University Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing in the United States of America who are leaders in this field. For further information on the Center you may visit their website at CAAT. We use in vitro screening tests, together with clinical studies on human volunteers to establish the safety of our products, as required by the Cosmetic Safety Regulations."
