Icky Institutions: The cruel companies

Hi all:

I've put together one of my few 'negative' posts - a list of companies to particularly watch out for.

Please note that many of these companies are responsible for a number of other brands - and in a few cases, you may recognize the brands more than the company name (for example Church & Dwight is responsible for Brillo, Nair, Arm & Hammer, Oxi Clean and other products).

If the company is listed, its brands will be listed in brackets to help you recognize it. However, you may also see some of the brands listed separately (i.e. Arm & Hammer is listed as its own listing as well as included in brackets after Church & Dwight). This is because although the company tests on animals, not every brand it owns does. If the brand is listed on its own, that means that that brand does test on animals. Some people choose not to buy from the company at all to send a message. Hopefully that makes sense!

You don't have to be cruel to be kind,
GiGi

PS Please click on the name of the company if it is linked. This link will take you to a blog post with the company's response to my email asking about their current policy on testing on animals. These posts will allow you to hear from the companies themselves what they are doing about animal testing, thus allowing you to make a more informed decision about supporting and purchasing their products.

  2. Hello there!

Are you sure about Estee Lauder? I always thought they stopped testing on animals after increased pressure of consumers, and of course they speak out against it on their website…

  3. Hi there:
Estee Lauder's stance is no animal testing unless required by law, which is also the stance of many other major cosmetics companies. "When required by law" means that some of the ingredients in their products will have been tested on animals if that was a legal requirement in the manufacturing process. Although this sounds unavoidable, it really isn't - check out this post where I explain a bit more about why this excuse is so, frankly, pathetic.

  5. Hi Gigi,

regarding Estee Lauder, I've checked on the caring consumer web and they are listed as they do not test on animals.
Is any other source then where to check for reliable information?
Thanks in advance for your help!

  6. I think Estee Lauder has been an ongoing debate because they did change their policies recently to say they would be against animal testing - but their official policy still states that they do it when required by law, so in my eyes I do not see that as cruelty-free, because inevitably some, if not most, of their products will have been tested on animals at some point, and that just isn't necessary when there are so many companies who are able to produce cosmetics without doing so. I don't know what Caring Consumer's personal standards are before declaring a company cruelty-free, unfortunately. Thanks for your comment!

  7. Hi, can you let me know if Nars cosmetics tests on animals? On their website they say they don't. Is that sufficient enough to know they don't? Thanks for your list of companies who do and don't use animals for testing. It's very helpful.

  8. This is one of those tricky judgment call situations. NARS' website, indeed, claims it does not test and has never tested on animals. Many sites even claim the founder, Francois Nars, is a committed vegan. While I don't doubt the brand's statement, NARS is owned by Shiseido, a company which does test on animals. So this is similar to a Burt's Bees situation, where you have a brand that commits itself to not testing on animals but is owned by a company (Clorox) that does not share that policy. I personally prefer to promote products made by entirely cruelty-free organizations and conglomerates but as a consumer, this is a decision for you to make.

  10. Do u know if Lorac tests on animals?

  11. Some of Estee Lauder's brands, such as Bobbi Brown, claim to be cruelty-free but because the parent company has not made a stance against it I boycott the overall company and all of its brands, which is where the confusion comes in. Make up - best brands that I like include e.l.f. cosmetics, AVON's mark line for a great deal, Wet'n'Wild for a cheap drugstore brand and probably one of my favourites is Revlon.

  12. Lorac doesn't test on animals but does buy ingredients from some source manufacturers who do. But overall its end product is for the most part cruelty-free - I'll leave that judgment call up to you!

  13. Thank you again for all of your help!! Your knowledge is vast and very helpful for me because I want to do what I can to help! I hate to keep asking you about brands but I can't seem to find some brands that I use or have used and was wondering if I should come to you with these questions or if there is a website you suggest I contact. As far as brands as Dior and Chanel, is it known whether they test their cosmetics on animals or is it just best to stay away from the brand all together because of the bad choices they have made with their clothing? The other brands I am curious about are sephora, hourglass, peter thomas roth, coverfx, sheaterra organics, and skyn iceland, and I am sure many more. Sorry to bug you with all of this! I jus wanna make sure I do this right!:) And emailing the companies has not always been successful for me. Or again, should I email a specific website (Peta?) to find the answers?
